Fun-Da-Mental is a British multi-ethnic hip-hop–ethno-techno–world fusion group formed in 1991. Led by core member Aki “Propa-Gandhi” Nawaz, the band is known for its energetic blend of Eastern and Western musical styles, its outspoken political stance, and its strong Islamic affiliation and advocacy.

The group emerged during the 1990s British Asian fusion of hip-hop and bhangra music. Their music addresses themes of race, identity, and anti-racism. Notably, their 1993 track “Wrath of the Blackman,” built around a sample from a Malcolm X speech, further solidified their assertive anti-racist sentiments.

Seize the Time, their first full-length album released in 1994, drew inspiration from the Black Panthers’ slogan. It featured fervently anti-racist lyrics and texts, making a powerful political statement1.

Fun-Da-Mental’s fusion of electronic beats, Indian, Afro-Caribbean, and worldbeat samples, along with their commitment to social justice, has earned them international attention and collaborations with artists from diverse backgrounds.
