Born in the wake of the civil rights movement in the USA, The Last Poets perform social-politically relevant lyrics to the beat of the drum. A new album ‘Understand What Black Is’ hit the streets in May, celebrating their 50 years on the frontline.
Produced by Prince Fatty (Hollie Cook / Mr. Bongo) and Nostalgia 77, the album embraces free-flowing trumpet, saxophone and flute melodies over rock-steady rhythms for a reggae-infused bed upon which the reality lyrics of Umar Bin Hassan and Abiodun Oyowele carry sway.
“Black is humanity, That beautiful chord
On a twelve string guitar, That makes you smile
That offers comfort, In turbulent times.”
